GBP Optimisation Mistakes That Hurt Local Rankings
The most damaging GBP mistakes aren't missing features, they're active guideline violations: keyword-stuffed business names, inconsistent contact details across directories, and unclaimed or unverified listings. Each one directly suppresses local pack visibility.
The mistakes to fix first
- Keyword-stuffed business name (e.g. "Best Plumber Mumbai 24/7") violates Google's guidelines
- Inconsistent NAP (name, address, phone) across Google, Justdial, Practo and other directories
- Leaving the listing unclaimed, missing photo, category and review controls entirely
- Wrong primary category chosen, diluting relevance signals

Mistakes that suppress local visibility
Most Google Business Profile problems are not missing features. They are small breaches of Google's guidelines or inconsistencies that quietly hold a listing back, or get it suspended. Google's guidelines are specific about names, addresses and categories (Google Business Profile guidelines), and they are worth reading once in full.
The mistakes we fix most often
- Keyword-stuffed names: "Best Dentist London 24/7" instead of your real business name breaches the guidelines and invites suspension
- Virtual offices and fake locations: creating listings at addresses you do not staff is prohibited
- Wrong primary category: the single most important relevance setting, often chosen once and never revisited
- Inconsistent details: different names, addresses or phone numbers across directories confuse both Google and customers
- Stale hours: especially around holidays, and a common reason for bad reviews
- Ignored reviews: unanswered reviews, good or bad, tell future customers nobody is listening
Reviews: the rules have teeth now
Buying or writing reviews is no longer just a guideline breach. The UK's DMCC Act made fake reviews unlawful from 6 April 2025, with CMA fines of up to 10% of global turnover (Cooley on the DMCC Act, April 2025), and the US FTC's rule of August 2024 allows civil penalties for fake reviews and testimonials (US FTC, Aug 2024).
Customers read carefully. BrightLocal's 2025 survey found 86% of consumers use Google to read reviews, and 63% expect a reply within a few days to a week (BrightLocal Local Consumer Review Survey 2025).
What to do this week
Check your business name, primary category and hours against reality. Reply to every review from the past three months. Those three steps fix most of the damage we see. See GBP optimisation and ranking in the local pack.
