Marketplace SEO builds category and listing pages for buyer-side search intent, with canonical tags and category consolidation preventing the duplicate-content cannibalization that user-generated listings often create. First ranking movement typically shows at weeks 8-12.
Marketplaces have an unusual SEO problem
A marketplace can have millions of pages without writing any of them. Sellers create listings, filters create combinations, and search creates results pages. Left alone, most of those pages are thin, duplicated or expired, and search engines spend their time crawling rubbish instead of your best categories.
The job is to decide which pages deserve to be indexed, make those pages genuinely useful, and keep the rest out of the way. It is architecture first, content second.

What Google has made clear
Google's spam policies describe scaled content abuse: large numbers of pages made mainly to rank rather than to help people (Google Search spam policies). After the March 2024 core update, Google said it expected around 40% less low-quality, unoriginal content in results (Search Engine Journal on Google's March 2024 update). Marketplaces with endless empty filter pages were among the sites that lost visibility.
Zapier shows what programmatic pages look like when done well: tens of thousands of integration pages that each match a real search, driving an estimated 16% of its organic traffic (Ahrefs, Zapier SEO case study). The difference from spam is simple. Every page has something useful on it that is not on any other page.
What we do
- Decide which category and filter combinations get indexed, based on search demand and inventory depth
- Add category copy, buying guidance and FAQs to the combinations that matter
- Set rules for expired and sold listings: redirect, keep with alternatives or remove
- Improve listing templates so sellers provide the detail buyers and search engines need
- Watch crawl stats and index coverage monthly
How we measure it
Organic transactions, new buyers from search and new sellers from search, tracked separately. Pair this with marketplace paid media to balance supply and demand faster.
