To appear in Google AI Overviews, a page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet in normal search, and it needs to answer part of the question clearly and helpfully. Google says no special files, schema or optimisations are required, so the work is strong SEO fundamentals plus answer-first content and brand signals.
What Google actually says
Google's documentation states there are "no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimisations necessary", and that you do not need new machine-readable files or special schema (Google Search Central: AI features and your website). That rules out a lot of the products being sold as "AI Overview optimisation".

What the independent data shows
- AI Overviews appeared on 21% of keywords in Ahrefs' analysis of 146 million results pages, and on 46.4% of queries of seven words or longer (Ahrefs Q1 2026 AI search report via Business Wire)
- Clicks to top-ranking pages fell 58% where AI Overviews appeared between late 2023 and late 2025 (Ahrefs Q1 2026 AI search report via Business Wire)
- Brand web mentions were the strongest correlate of brand visibility in AI Overviews, at 0.664 (Ahrefs, 75,000-brand AI Overview study)
A practical plan
- Check eligibility: indexed, not blocked by nosnippet, fast and mobile friendly (web.dev: Web Vitals)
- Target longer questions: the data shows AI Overviews appear most on long, specific queries
- Answer first: direct answer, then detail, using the question as a heading
- Cover sub-questions: AI Mode's query fan-out runs several related searches at once (Google, AI Mode in the UK), so topic depth helps
- Build brand signals: reviews, mentions and consistent entity facts
- Measure: track which target queries show AI Overviews and whether you are cited
Do not chase position one alone. AI Overviews often cite pages from further down the results when they answer part of the question well.
