Ahrefs also found the top quarter of brands by web mentions averaged more than ten times as many AI Overview mentions as the next quarter, and about 26% of brands received none at all (Ahrefs, 75,000-brand AI Overview study). Visibility is concentrated. Brands either appear often or barely at all.

Why mentions work
AI models learn and retrieve from what the web says. A brand discussed often, by credible sources, in the context of a topic, becomes strongly associated with that topic. A link without context adds less.
How to earn mentions that count
- Be quotable: original data, clear opinions and expert commentary. See digital PR
- Show up on video: interviews, explainers and reviews on YouTube (Ahrefs Q1 2026 AI search report via Business Wire)
- Be present where buyers compare: review sites, directories and community discussions
- Stay consistent: the same description of what you do, everywhere
Correlation is not causation. Brands with many mentions also tend to be larger and better known. But the pattern is consistent enough to shape where effort goes.
