How to Track Brand Visibility in AI Search
To track brand visibility in AI search, choose a fixed set of buyer questions, run them on a schedule across the main AI platforms, and record how often you are mentioned, cited and recommended compared with competitors, alongside AI referral traffic and branded search trends.
Why screenshots are not enough
AI answers vary by wording, location and time. One good answer proves little. What matters is the trend across a consistent set of prompts. That is especially important now that fewer people click: Pew found clicks on traditional results fell to 8% of visits when Google showed an AI summary (Pew Research Center, July 2025).

A five-step framework
- Choose 20 to 50 prompts that reflect real buyer questions, from broad ("best CRM for small law firms") to specific
- Pick platforms: ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity, and Copilot for B2B
- Run monthly, with the same wording, logged out where possible
- Record four things: mentioned or not, cited or not, position in any list, and how you are described
- Compare with three to five competitors to calculate share of voice
Connect it to business results
- Referral traffic from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai and other AI platforms in analytics
- Branded search volume, which Ahrefs found correlated with AI Overview visibility at 0.392 (Ahrefs, 75,000-brand AI Overview study)
- A "How did you hear about us?" question that lists AI assistants as an option
Keep the prompt set stable for at least a quarter. Changing prompts every month makes trends impossible to read.
