Reducing Cart Abandonment: A Practical Guide
Cart abandonment rates typically run 65-80% industry-wide, driven mostly by forced account creation, unexpected costs revealed late in checkout, and too many form fields. Fixing these three issues alone recovers a meaningful share of otherwise-lost sales.
The highest-impact fixes
- Offer guest checkout, never force account creation before purchase
- Show shipping and total cost early, not revealed as a surprise at the final step
- Reduce form fields to the minimum needed to process the order
- Add trust signals (secure checkout badges, clear return policy) near the payment step

Start with why people leave
Cart abandonment is normal; Baymard Institute puts the average documented rate at 70.22% (Baymard Institute). Some of it is browsing you cannot prevent. A lot of it is friction you can. Baymard's research on why shoppers abandon during checkout gives a clear order of priorities.
The main reasons, and the fix for each
| Reason | Share of abandoners | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Extra costs too high | 40% | Show delivery and fees early, on product pages |
| Delivery too slow | 20% | Show delivery dates, offer faster options |
| Did not trust the site with card details | 19% | Trusted payment options, security signals, clear contact details |
| Forced to create an account | 18% | Guest checkout |
| Checkout too long or complicated | 17% | Fewer fields, autofill, progress indicator |
| Website errors | 17% | Test checkout on real devices regularly |
| Returns policy unsatisfactory | 13% | Clear, fair returns information near the buy button |

Why it is worth the effort
Baymard estimates that better checkout design could lift conversion by around 35% for a large ecommerce site (Baymard Institute). Speed helps too: a 0.1 second mobile improvement lifted retail conversion by 8.4% in the Deloitte and Google study (Deloitte and Google, Milliseconds Make Millions).
Show the total early. In the UK, the DMCC Act now treats hidden mandatory charges ("drip pricing") as an unfair practice (Cooley on the DMCC Act, April 2025). Showing the full price upfront is good for conversion and compliance.
Checkout redesign was central to FlowerAura's 2.6X peak-season conversion lift.
