Why Category Pages Matter More Than Product Pages for SEO

Aman Sharma

Category pages target broader, higher-volume searches than individual product pages, and consolidate ranking authority instead of splitting it across hundreds of thin product listings. A well-optimised category page with unique copy usually outperforms the sum of its individual product pages.

The maths of category pages

One product page can rank for a handful of searches about that product. One well-built category page can rank for hundreds of broader searches, and it keeps ranking when individual products sell out or change. That is why the category layer usually carries most of an ecommerce site's organic revenue.

Why this matters more after 2024

Google's March 2024 core update aimed to reduce low-quality, unoriginal content in results by around 40% (Search Engine Journal on Google's March 2024 update), and its spam policies name scaled low-value pages directly (Google Search spam policies). Thousands of product pages carrying only manufacturer copy look exactly like that. Strong category pages with genuinely useful buying guidance look like the opposite.

Public evidence

Programmatic pages can work when each one is useful. Zapier's integration pages, each built for a real search, drive an estimated 16% of its organic traffic according to Ahrefs (Ahrefs, Zapier SEO case study). The same principle applies to category and filtered pages: index the combinations people search for and give each one real content.

What a strong category page includes

  • A short introduction that helps people choose, above or just below the grid
  • Filters that help users without creating thousands of indexable duplicates
  • Buying guidance and FAQs at the bottom, answering real questions
  • Internal links to sub-categories and related categories
  • Structured data for the products listed where it applies (Google: structured data intro)
  • Fast loading, even with many product images; a 0.1 second mobile improvement lifted retail conversion by 8.4% in the Deloitte and Google study (Deloitte and Google, Milliseconds Make Millions)

FAQ

Why do product pages struggle to rank?
They target narrow, specific searches; category pages target broader searches with higher, more consistent volume.
Should category pages have unique written content?
Yes, a category page with only a product grid and no descriptive content ranks worse than one with unique, keyword-relevant copy.
Do product pages matter for SEO at all?
Yes, for long-tail, specific-product searches, but they shouldn’t be the primary organic traffic driver for a catalogue.
Should product pages be ignored?
No. They still need unique descriptions, good images and reviews. But the category layer usually deserves more effort first.
Should filtered pages be indexed?
Only filter combinations with real search demand and enough products. The rest should be kept out of the index.
