Ecommerce SEO focuses on category pages built for search intent, consolidating ranking authority instead of splitting it across hundreds of thin product listings. Work is scoped 8-12 weeks ahead of a known peak-season window, not started reactively once the season begins.

Why category pages carry most of the weight

If you run an online shop, most of the searches worth winning are category searches, not product names. People type "women's running shoes" or "birthday cakes delivered today" long before they know which product they want. A product page can only ever answer one of those. A good category page answers hundreds of them, and it keeps doing so after individual products sell out.

That is why we start with the category layer. We rewrite the top of each important category with copy that actually helps someone choose, tidy the filters so they stop generating thousands of near-duplicate URLs, and point internal links at the pages that make money rather than spreading authority thinly across every SKU.

Why this matters more in 2026 than it did two years ago

Search has become less forgiving of thin pages. When Google rolled out its March 2024 core update it said it expected to cut low-quality, unoriginal content in results by around 40% (Search Engine Journal on Google's March 2024 update). Shops with thousands of templated product pages and one line of manufacturer copy felt that first.

The other shift is AI summaries. Pew Research found that when a Google results page showed an AI summary, people clicked a traditional result in 8% of visits, against 15% when there was no summary (Pew Research Center, July 2025). Category pages that answer the buying question clearly, with real comparisons and specifics, are the ones that still get the click and the citation.

Public evidence

Speed is part of SEO for shops, not a separate project. Across 37 retail and travel brands, Deloitte and Google found a 0.1 second improvement in mobile speed lifted retail conversion rates by 8.4% and average order value by 9.2% (Deloitte and Google, Milliseconds Make Millions).

What we actually do in the first 90 days

  • Crawl the whole catalogue and find the faceted URLs, redirects and out-of-stock pages that waste crawl budget
  • Map every priority search to one category, sub-category or guide, so pages stop competing with each other
  • Rewrite category introductions, FAQs and buying guidance for the top 20 to 50 categories by revenue
  • Fix product structured data so price, stock and reviews show properly in results (Google: structured data intro)
  • Plan seasonal category work 8 to 12 weeks ahead of your peak, which is how we timed the work behind Bakingo's festive order growth

How we report it

We report organic revenue and orders by category group, not a list of keyword positions. If a category moves up but revenue does not follow, we treat that as a problem to fix, usually the page itself or the price competitiveness, not as a win. If you want the wider picture first, our guide to category pages versus product pages explains the trade-off in more detail.

FAQ

Why do category pages matter more than product pages?
Category pages target broader, higher-volume searches and consolidate ranking authority instead of splitting it across many thin product pages.
Should SEO be timed to peak season?
Yes, category-page SEO work should be scoped 8-12 weeks ahead of a known peak window, not started once the season begins.
How long until ecommerce SEO shows results?
Typically 8-12 weeks for first ranking movement, in line with SerpHike’s standard SEO timeline.
How many category pages should an ecommerce site optimise first?
Start with the 20 to 50 categories that already drive most revenue or have the highest search demand. Doing those properly beats a light edit across the whole catalogue.
Should out-of-stock product pages be deleted?
Usually not. Keep the page live if the product is coming back, show alternatives, and only redirect when the product is gone for good. Deleting pages that have links and rankings throws value away.
