Local businesses, single-location retail, clinics, service providers, typically get more return from GBP Optimisation and local SEO than from paid ads, since local pack visibility drives foot traffic and calls at a lower cost per lead.
What matters most for local businesses?
- Google Business Profile completeness and review volume
- Local SEO on 5-10 targeted pages, not a large content operation
- Click-to-call and WhatsApp as primary conversion paths, not long forms
See the Locations directory for city-specific pages, or the GBP Optimisation service page for the full offer.

Found first, chosen most
For a local business, most new customers start with a search on a phone: "near me", a service plus a town, or your name. What they see in the map results, and how quickly your site loads when they tap, decides whether they call you or the next business down. Getting that right is the highest-return marketing most local businesses can do.
The essentials
- Google Business Profile: right categories, accurate hours, photos, services, prices and weekly posts
- Reviews: a request after every job or visit, and a reply to every review
- Website: fast on mobile, clear services and prices, click-to-call and booking
- Local pages: five to ten pages for your main services and areas
- Consistency: the same name, address and phone number everywhere online
Why these matter most
Google says local results are based mainly on relevance, distance and prominence (Google Business Profile guidelines). BrightLocal's 2025 survey found only 4% of consumers never read reviews, 86% use Google to read them, and more than three quarters watch video when researching local businesses (BrightLocal Local Consumer Review Survey 2025). And speed converts: the Deloitte and Google study found a 0.1 second mobile improvement lifted lead-form completion by 21.6% (Deloitte and Google, Milliseconds Make Millions).
Keep reviews real. Fake reviews are now unlawful in the UK under the DMCC Act, with CMA fines of up to 10% of global turnover (Cooley on the DMCC Act, April 2025), and the US FTC can seek civil penalties under its 2024 rule (US FTC, Aug 2024).
When to add paid ads
Once the profile, reviews and site are in good shape, paid search or Local Services Ads can fill quiet periods or promote a high-value service. Before that, ads usually just pay for traffic that a weak profile then loses.
